The perspective I’ve been scouting has changed yet again. I’m not working strictly as a copywriter. I found a new opportunity as a marketing assistant for a small real estate company in Middle Tennessee.
Real estate and I are going to be good friends, I think. I do enjoy living in a house and that’s the specialty of this particular firm. As a there is only one consultant on this team, I’m saddling up to take care of all outbound communication and marketing efforts.
What’s different from corporate? I work at some point every day, seven days a week. I find it nice to scroll through my phone with a purpose of finding out what the competition is doing.
What is your reason for working client facing or as a member of a corporate team?
It happens when your team isn’t balanced in their individual workload.
It happens when you’re a new member to the team.
It happens when you aren’t prepared for downtime.
There are thousands of reasons to think, “I have nothing to do.” I completely agree with that statement on most levels.
What do I do to combat the lack of productivity? I watch. I listen. I research.
My grandmother would say it’s because you have twice as many ears and eyes on your head than a mouth.
I watch, listen, and research to make myself aware of other struggles in the marketing department, on my team, and in my professional interactions.
What do you do when there’s nothing to do?
When you have a small business, how important is it to communicate with clients? VERY!

As a freelancer, I’m readily available to many clients. It is difficult to do so when your primary means of communication (the smart phone) is currently in disrepair. For the foreseeable future, I’m struggling with a temporary flip phone. I’m not really sure how much I like it. It feels a little bit like learning to swim for the first time.

It’s also given me a means to step back, observe my means of communicating with clients and is giving me an opportunity to pause, think, and think more before I respond to that email, voicemail, or pigeon.
I’m relying heavily on my email service, call forwarding, client relationship manager (CRM), Toggl (time management), and my Passion Planner to make sure I’m on task for my clients.

This week, Netflix let me know that Across the Universe was in my queue, waiting to be watched. It’s a musical based on The Beatles music catalog. It’s a great watch for anyone who enjoys their music or grew up during the Vietnam era.
There’s a scene when young Jude is invited to Max’s house for Thanksgiving. A lively debate ensues when an uncle tells Max, “What you do defines who you are.” In contrast, Jude ends the discussion with, “Surely, it’s not what you do but how you do it.”
I’ve struggled for a long time to define myself as a writer. It feels good to wake up in the morning knowing I can communicate through so many mediums and help brands, small businesses, and other creative services become a part of someone’s day-to-day life.
Today, while warming up for my chiropractor’s appointment, one of the staff members asked me, “If you could only do one thing for the rest of your life, what would you be doing?”
For the first time, I took a breath and said, “I’m already doing it. I’m a writer.”
